Why test?

Many of us are increasingly using data to monitor or improve our health or wellbeing. Blood Lipids is an important marker for anyone interested in their long-term health. Blood Lipid Profile testing is recommended for all adults over 50 (cholesterol levels generally rise as we age). It’s also important for anyone diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

People are often unaware that they have high cholesterol or triglyceride levels as there are no specific symptoms associated with these levels. However, they do increase the risk of associated life-altering conditions.

High levels of cholesterol are linked to heart disease and strokes. Excessive triglyceride levels are known to increase the risk of several serious medical conditions including heart disease and pancreatitis.

Knowing that your levels are within normal parameters will provide peace of mind. However, if they are not where you’d like them to be, it’s important to know, as levels can often be reduced through diet and exercise, or through medication.

What are Lipids

What are Lipids and why do they matter?

Lipids are the different kinds of cholesterol and other fats that are found in the blood. Checking your Blood Lipid Profile will give you information on your total cholesterol level, together with the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides.

This includes:

  • High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) – often referred to as good cholesterol because it takes away excess cholesterol and directs them to the liver for removal.
  • Non-HDL cholesterol – considered ‘bad’ cholesterol because it is deposited in the blood vessels, which ultimately constricts blood flow.
  • Triglycerides – a type of fat carried in the blood and essential for good health, but harmful at high levels.
